Middle School Day of Service

On Friday, February 25th, the middle school students spent the half day working on several service projects. Mr. Tweedt started off the morning with a devotional about servant leaders. The students broke into small groups to discuss leaders from the Bible and how they served God, and the areas in which they were weak. The students discussed how despite their own sins and weaknesses, God can use them to lead in many ways. It is not just about big events or special days of service, but about a lifestyle of serving others and God in the way we live and work with others.

Next, we divided into 3 teams to work on sewing baby quilts, packaging food, and bundling the school's used paper for recycling. A few mothers and grandmothers came to help the students with the sewing machines. They were able to sew together 14 quilts to be donated to young, single mothers. The students also repackaged 200 pounds of food for the Coralville Food Pantry to distribute. The morning went by quickly, and it was very exciting to see the students so eager to serve! It was also a great opportunity to get to know and work with some of the mothers and grandmothers of Heritage.

Chick Fil-A Night

Each month, the first Tuesday of the month, Chick Fil-A at Coral Ridge Mall donates 20% of sales back to HCS to use for the playground fund from 5-8p.m. This is a great time to join in fellowship with other HCS families as well as to support the school! Thanks Chick Fil-A!!!!

Heritage Christian School's 5th Annual Baking Contest

This week, the 6th grade competed in Heritage’s 5th annual cookie baking contest. For our unit over fractions, the students were required to pick a cookie recipe and determine how much of each ingredient was needed to bake only 1 cookie (by dividing fractions) and how much of each ingredient was needed to bake 2 batches of cookies (by multiplying fractions). Baking the cookies was actually optional, but most of the kids couldn’t resist making a yummy treat. The students brought their cookies in Tuesday to the teachers’ lounge where they were judged by the teachers on taste and presentation. (A tough job but someone had to do it.)
Each year, the winner is awarded the prize of wearing the famous “Cookie Champ” Apron and gets to go to Miss Veenstra’s house with two friends to show her how to bake the cookies. This year’s winner is Asa Herrin. He baked the delicious popcorn cookies made with a cream cookie recipe and marshmellows. All of the students did a great job with the baking!

2nd Annual Vendor Fair

Thank you to all who supported our 2nd Annual Vendor Fair! It was a great success with many wonderful vendors in attendance. The vendor fair helped us to raise over $1700 to help us reach our first goal of $10,000 to purchase new playground equipment! On Thursday, November 11th, the annual Heritage Christian School's Veteran's Day Celebration was held at Grace Community Church. There was a slideshow honoring veterans who are connected to Heritage families. Heritage Singers and the Heritage School Band performed various patriotic pieces. May God richly bless our men and women who have served and continue to serve our country and protect our freedom as well as their families.

Go Green! Week

Last week, the middle school students participated in a week long integrative, thematic unit on the environment. The students were split into mixed age level groups with the following objectives:
1. Search the Scriptures for verses about why Creation is important and God's call for us as His stewards

2. Research online effectively by evaluating sources, analyzing content, and collecting evidence from multiple perspectives

3. Learn a variety of ways to collect data

4. Create a plan to sort the trash at HCS into recyclable and non-recyclable materials and implement that plan

5. Read and present data in pie graphs

6. Research the advantages and disadvantages of both renewable and nonrenewable energy sources

7. Gain more knowledge about reducing, reusing, and recycling trash including the science involved in composting

8. Reuse items to design a robot in art class

9. Develop presentation skills by compiling information learned throughout the week into a presentation for the elementary students

Having all of the subject areas focus on the same content material gave the teachers an opportunity to better show our students how all of the subjects are connected. Working together with students of different age levels also helped us to better build community as a middle school. Last week was a great opportunity to reflect with the students on how our God, by nature, is a communal God. God has always been three persons in One. All of His creation reflects that relational attribute, and we hope that through last week and in our future lessons that we can continue to point our students to a better understanding of who God is and how we can glorify Him. In studying the environment and how people have used the resources given to them, the students were also made more aware of the effects of sin. The students looked at some very sad statistics on how much garbage is actually produced each year in the United States. Throughout the unit, we had the students looking at research on ways to lessen the problem. Mr. Arnold also spent time looking at verses in Scripture that outline our call to be wise stewards of the earth. It is our hope that this unit helped your children to be more reflective, more informed, and more proactive in being responsible stewards.

International Day

The students at Heritage Christian School were blessed by various presenters who had been missionaries or served others throughout the world. This was an awesome opportunity for the children to understand different areas of our world and the needs that exist. Thank you to all of those who helped to make International Day 2010 a success!

Pizza Ranch and Par-Tee Zone Fun Night

This past Friday, October 8th friends and families of Heritage Christian school participated in a Fun Night Fundraiser at the Pizza Ranch and Par-Tee Zone in the Sycamore Mall. There was a great turn out! Middle school students cleared tables at the Pizza Ranch to serve others while raising money for the school through tips given. A sincere thank you to the Pizza Ranch and Par-Tee Zone who donated percentages of their profits back to the school!

4th Grade Science Project

In 4th grade this month we have been studying insects. We talked about their lifecycle, body parts, and their habitats. The students had the project to collect 10-15 insects and identify each insect correctly.

Our final activity with insects was making spiders and insects out cookies and candies. This was by far the tastiest class experience!

7th Grade Field Trip to Hills Bank

The 7th grade math class recently took a field trip to the North Liberty Hills Bank. Amy Swenka, Senior Customer Service Representative, instructed the class on how to write checks and balance a checkbook. She also discussed with the students the importance of keeping track of money. The students really enjoyed filling out checks and touring the bank. Thanks, Amy! Back at school, the students discussed how all of our money is really God's money that He has entrusted in our care. Knowing how to manage money helps us to be better stewards of His gifts.

The Heritage Christian School Eagles’ Varsity volleyball team is now 3-0 and the junior varsity is 2-0. After Tuesday’s game against Cedar Valley, Coach Tackaberry said, “This was the best game I have ever seen the Eagles play!” Players are excited for their game today in Cedar Rapids. You can see them play at home next on Thursday, September 23rd, at 4:30 vs. Isaac Newton Christian Academy.

Bird Beak Experiment

Last week in 4th grade, we talked about the way God has designed creatures with special tools. One of the animals we looked at was birds. Birds have a variety of beaks depending on where they live and what they eat. They are all designed specifically for their habitat. Using the following human tools we tried to mimic bird’s beaks. We used needle nose pliers, regular pliers, tweezers and chopsticks. I’ll leave it up to you to determine which tool was for which type of bird. -Mrs. Super

Solon Care Center

Solon Care Center to play board games with the residents. The students enjoyed building relationships with one another and the residents. Students from Heritage visit the nursing home once a month, and both the students and residents look forward to it!

On July 10th, 2010, various parents, teachers and staff came to help move our school items from the old building to the new one.

This has been a long awaited day, 12 years in the making. God is so good and we give Him all the glory!

Boxtops Celebration!

Over the past several months, thousands of boxtops have been collected as part of a class competition. The collection of those box tops garnered more than $1,900.00 for the school. Mrs. Vahle's kindergarten and Miss Veenstra's 7th and 8th grade classes enjoyed an ice cream sundae party in celebration of bringing in the most boxtops, collectively bringing in 7851 boxtops. All School Picnic

On Friday, May 21st, Heritage Christian School students and faculty celebrated God's faithfulness to us in providing for Operation G.O.O.D. with an all school picnic. The picnic began with a pizza picnic outside. We also held chapel outside with Mr. Annis as our speaker. He challenged the students to study the Scriptures and ask their parents to help them to do so, not only when they were in school, but also this summer. His prayer for them is that they would know and defend what the Word of God says. After chapel, the students played capture the flag and a balloon popping game. Even Mrs. Schallau joined in the fun!

Parents and Students Leave Their Mark on the New School

On May 19th, students and their families, teachers, staff and friends of Heritage had the opportunity to go into the new school's media center from 3:30-4:30p.m. During this time, Jake Henkle opened the group in prayer. Following the prayer, everyone had the opportunity to write Bible verses on the floor before the carpet was to be laid. It was a reminder that this building is not ours, but rather the work of our awesome God and Creator. May we use it for His glory!

7th and 8th Graders Visit the Creation Museum

Creation Museum Trip by Katie Arentson

Last week the 7^th/8^th grade students embarked on an incredible journey to the Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky. It was a whirlwind of a trip, but it was well worth it. Students explored the 70,000 square foot museum which really brought the Bible to life. They traveled through the Garden of Eden, Noah’s ark, Stargazers Planetarium, Dinosaur Den, and many other attractions. They also viewed many different presentations that provided scientific information that helped build their faith and equipped them to defend their beliefs. Here are a few quotes from the students themselves.

First Grade Field Trip to Kent Park

Operation G.O.O.D.

Operation G.O.O.D. (Giving Of Ourselves Day) is one of Heritage's annual fundraisers. Students collect pledges for an afternoon of service within the community. For the past seven years, Heritage has joined efforts with the Army Corps of Engineers, picking garlic mustard weed from the Coralville Dam area and Squire's Point. This is an invasive plant that if not picked will continue to spread, killing other vegetation that is consumed by area wildlife. Students in kindergarten through eighth grade spent the afternoon on May 7th picking and disposing of this weed. This year, students in Pre-Kindergarten also participated by helping to clean classrooms at the school though they did not solicit pledges for their service. Thank you to all those that supported this afternoon of service and made it a huge success!

Grandparents' Day a Big Success

Heritage held its ninth annual Grandparents' Day celebration, observing a record attendance. Almost 200 grandparents swarmed Heritage's classrooms on April 23rd. Chapel was held in the sanctuary and a special performance was given by the Heritage Singers. Thank you to all who made this day possible!

On Monday, April 5th, the second graders at Heritage Christian School were delighted to take a field trip to Miss Early’s house to make chocolate chip cookies. The students had to read and follow directions from the recipe. They practiced their measuring, math, and observation skills. The best part of the day was being able to enjoy the delicious tastes of learning! Who knew learning could be so yummy?

ACSI Math Olympics Results!

Every spring, ACSI hosts a math competition called the ACSI Math Olympics By Mail. Students from eight area Christian schools compete by taking a series of math tests at their school. The tests are sent to Community Christian School in Fort Dodge, where they are graded. The top five scores in each grade level and category are awarded a ribbon. In addition, all first place winners scoring 85% or above are awarded a first place medal. This year, 25 students from Heritage Christian School competed in this competition. HCS Night at Chick Fil-A

The very first HCS Night at Chick Fil-A will be tomorrow night (Tuesday) from 5-8p.m. at the Coral Ridge Mall. Chick Fil-A has agreed to generously donate 20% of all HCS orders from 5-8p.m. to our new playground fund. This will be a weekly event, every Tuesday night from 5-8p.m. but with tomorrow being our kickoff, there will be drawings and carousel rides. Be sure to tell the cashier you are with HCS! Kids Against Hunger-Students Package 4000 Meals

On Friday, March 12th, the 5th - 8th grade students packaged 4000 meals for Kids Against Hunger that will be sent to Haiti in the next couple of weeks.

"Kids Against Hunger, Cedar Rapids is one of thirty food packaging satellites across sixteen states for Kids Against Hunger, International. Kids Against Hunger is a non-profit organization whose mission is to significantly reduce the number of hungry and starving children in over forty countries globally. They are changing the world, giving life

and new hope to those experiencing starvation, and they do this by mobilizing the energy and compassion of American children, teenagers, and adultvolunteers. To do this they partner with local organizations to fundraise and assemble food

packages. Each food package provides six nutritionally-complete servings with

sources of easily digestible protein, carbohydrates, over twenty vitamins and minerals, and all nine of the essential amino acids required for complete nutrition needed by an undernourished child’s body and mind, helping them actually recover from starvation."

Spirit Week at HCS

The week before Spring break was Spirit Week at HCS. The students had a great time wearing their pajamas to school on Monday, dressing like years past on Tuesday, getting wacky for Wacky Wednesday, picking a color and dressing head to toe in it on Thursday and showing their school spirit by wearing their blue and white on Friday. A fun week was had by all. GO HCS!

Art Fun with Pre-K

Today in art, the 3 and 5 day Pre-Kindergarten class was introduced to their new artist of the month, Henri Matisse. Students viewed one of his famous paintings, "Woman with the Hat" (see picture). After class discussion regarding Matisse, the children were given the opportunity to create their own version of Matisse's "Woman with the Hat" by using face paint. Students took turns "painting" Mr. Annis' face Matisse style, by using simple strokes of color. After painting, the children drew their portrait of Mr. Annis using the same colors they chose to paint on his face.
Typically, there is an integration of Biblical principles in each lesson. Since the lesson fell on the Friday before Valentine's Day, class discussion centered around what true love is and how Christ showed us how to love and how much He loved us by giving us His one and only Son!

Operation Christmas Child

Heritage students collected items to fill shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child. These boxes will be given to children in need across the nations, that may not otherwise have a gift for Christmas. This year we were able to fill 29 boxes and cover the cost for shipping and handling for these boxes. We are praying that these shoeboxes demonstrate the love of Christ and bless the children that receive them. May they experience God's love for them through these shoeboxes. Thanksgiving Lunch with Family and Friends

Every year families have the opportunity to come and share a Thanksgiving lunch with their students. This year was no different! Many family and friends came to share in this meal and celebrate the many blessings that have been bestowed upon us. All students and teachers and any family and friends that were able, gathered in the gymnasium for this lunch on the Monday before Thanksgiving. Thank you to all those volunteers that helped to serve!

Everything but the Turkey

Again this year, Heritage Christian School conducted a food drive called "Everything but the Turkey" to supply Thanksgiving meals to families in need. The goal of 30 meals was reached with a few leftovers! Each class was assigned an item to bring in to contribute. This year, because of a generous donor, a turkey was added to each meal. 345.5 pounds of food was collected! Thanks to all of those who contributed!

Veteran's Day Celebration at Heritage Christian School

On November 11th, students, teachers, friends and families of Heritage Christian School honored our veterans. Approximately 30 veterans, their families, students, teachers and community members gathered in the Sanctuary of Grace Community Church as the Heritage Singers performed various patriotic songs. A keynote address was given by Major Kelly Scott. The veterans were honored with a slide presentation. Those veterans who were present, each introduced themselves, their rank, branch and service to our country. At the end of the program, Heritage students had the opportunity to shake hands with the veterans and personally thank them for their service.

62 Days 'Til Christmas Shopping Extravaganza Vendor Fair a Success!

People from the community were able to come and do some of their Christmas shopping while avoiding mall mayhem on October 24th. Many home based businesses and local artists were represented. All funds from this event will be put toward the construction of a playground at our new school. Watch for more upcoming events to help raise funds for our playground. New photos from October 6th, 2009. Heritage representative Lincoln McIlravy says that we are largely on schedule, with a few exceptions. He's impressed with Frye Builders. He's impressed with Shive-Hattery. He's also happy that of the $100,000 of contingency funds allocated for this project, that we've only burned through $23,000 so far. That means that so far there is a potential project savings of $77,000 if we don't tap into this fund anymore. Please pray for this scenario!

Do you remember anxiously waiting after the flood of 2008, hoping that prices would correct? Our patience was not in vain! The contract we signed is $1.1 million below the low bid from last summer…and did I mention that we’ve added two additional classrooms to the project?! To top it all off, Heritage supporters now have additional financial incentive to participate.

Heritage has received a generous offer where every $1 cash gift will turn into $3, thanks to a “two for one” Matching Gift offer. This offer is good for the next $60,000 cash raised, broken into $20,000 increments due by July 31, October 31, and December 31, 2009. The Groundbreak before Groundbreaking

Although large machinery technically began breaking ground today, May 12, 2009, the official Groundbreaking ceremony will be held on the last day of school. Join us on Friday, May 29th at noon at the site. Park on the street near the corner of Hackberry St. and Juniper Court. Frye Builders of Muscatine won a competitive bid to construct our new 13 classroom, PreK - 8th grade facility.

Here is an excerpt from the newsletter that will be mailed out Thursday, April 9th, prior to the next Board meeting:

•The Building Committee and Board are currently reviewing bids
•The Building Committee will provide the Board with a recommendation
•The total project cost appears to be no more than $3.85 million
•We must raise $350,000 to earn $500,000 of Matching Gift Opportunities
•Raising this $350,000 will put us in a position to borrow an $850,000 loan

We have a “Chicken and Egg” scenario on our hands. We need
to raise $350,000 over the next year. The Board’s challenge is
to determine by April 30th if we believe that we’ll be able to raise
an additional $350,000 within the next year. If the answer is “yes
we believe that we can raise $350,000 over the next year,” then
the Board will accept a bid by April 30th. If the answer is “no, we
don’t believe we can raise $350,000 over the next year,” then the
bids will expire once again.

Meetings Tonight

Both the Building Committee and the Board are having seperate meetings tonight. The Building Committee will review our bids with the intention of providing the Board a recommondation. The Board in the meantime will review our financial position and discuss scenarios.

Bids Come in Substantially Lower!

Bids for Heritage's new school were delivered by 10 different contractors at two o'clock on Tuesday, March 31st. This response was FIVE times greater than the first bid process during the ill-fated flood of 2008.

Heritage officials still have much to discuss regarding the bids, however we are publicly stating that the bids have come in SUBSTANTIALLY lower than this past summer! Praise God!

Huge Demand for Drawings
